In this new era of music streaming, many people seem to wonder whether song and album downloading is becoming irrelevant. Apparently, not quite yet.
Music downloading is as strong as ever, according to a new NPD study based on data from 5,400 consumer surveys. In fact, streaming only seems to bolster downloads.
Though streaming services, like Spotify, Pandora, and Rdio, have grown at an extraordinary rate, music fans still want to own albums. According to NPD, 44 million U.S. residents paid for the download of at least one song track or album last year. And this number has stayed basically the same for the past three years. In fact, 2012 saw a 6 percent increase in paid-for downloads.
"There's a belief that consumers don't need to buy music because of streaming options," Russ Crupnick, NPD's senior vice president of industry analysis, said in a statement, "when in fact streamers are much more likely than the average consumer to buy music downloads."
One third of the people surveyed by NPD said that owning music is important and 30 percent said listening to an entire album is essential. Of those consumers that claimed to be oft-streamers, many said they downloaded more albums because they discovered new music via streaming.
Several other companies have come on the downloading scene, but Apple is still the behemoth of the music download world. Nearly 10 years ago, the tech giant launched its iTunes Store, and it's still dominating digital music downloads.
Apple claimed 63 percent of the paid music download market in the fourth quarter of 2012, with 8 out of 10 buyers going to iTunes for their downloads, according to NPD. Amazon came in second, with 22 percent of users buying music from AmazonMP3. This is up from 2011, when Amazon had only 15 percent of the market.
"Since the launch of Apple's iTunes store, digital music downloads have become the dominant revenue source for the recorded-music industry, and iTunes continues to be the dominant retailer," Crupnick said.
The social network gives iPhone users a way to use certain Home features, Google sidesteps ads in Glass, and CNET looks at how tech was used to communicate after Boston Marathon explosions.

The Cali music fest has been invaded by music-loving celebs like Leonardo DiCaprio, "Scary Movie 5" star Lindsay Lohan, Paris Hilton, Hilary Duff and fellow "Twilight" star Kellan Lutz. And the "Breaking Dawn" couple was spotted among the A-listers hanging out in the desert, checking out music not too far away from their pal Katy Perry.
While Perry opted for a spicy leopard-print get-up, the couple kept their festival outfits casual. Stewart was snapped in a white T-shirt and baseball cap, while Pattinson opted for a gray sweatshirt on Friday, the first day of the two-weekend festival. The song's throbbing electro beat immediately recalls the irresistible catchiness of "Gangnam Style," but Psy's performance only showcases how much sillier he's become in the wake of his emergence as a worldwide phenomenon. Evidently he's so rich now he can afford to get his tongue surgically embedded in his cheek. Although he expands upon the garish lifestyle he chronicled in the YouTube-record-breaking clip for its predecessor, "Gentleman" effectively parodies a rich heel, subjecting ladies within his celebrity orbit to "Billy Madison"-style gags like pulling chairs out from beneath them and speeding up treadmills until they fall off.
Although stink-palming a girl in a library ranks among the video's best moments, his "performance" of an (admittedly unclear) English language lyric is the one we love best: As he says either "Wet Psy!" or "West Side" (and we hope it's the former), Psy and two bikini-clad women are catapulted into a swimming pool. Meanwhile, he gleefully terrorizes a kids' soccer game and holds up an unfortunate elevator passenger who desperately needs to pee before meeting his match — a buxom gym rat who gives him a taste of his own medicine.
One-hit wonder or not, Psy is clearly savvy enough to take advantage of his 15 minutes of fame, even if he doesn't seem to take it too seriously. Even before the video cuts to behind-the-scenes footage of Psy laughing his way through its goofiest moments, he simultaneously satirizes superstardom and attempts to enhance his own, aiming to re-create "Gangnam Style" magic with a new dance routine. Will it work? I guess we'll know when Matt Lauer starts doing it on the "Today" show.
